Learning essentially is bridging in it's essence. New material must be linked to previously learned material in such a way that it is new enough to be exciting, yet similar enough to previous knowledge to not result in unwanted anxiety and confusion. Dr. Lev Vygotsky's The Proximal Zone in one of the most well known works that deals effectively with this delicate balance that results in optimal learning outcomes.
